Dear Union School District Community,
The Union School District is committed to transparency and the safety of our students, staff, and visitors. We are writing to inform you of a new legal requirement under Act 44, which mandates that school districts notify the community of any incident occurring on school property in which a weapon is involved.
Please note that the legal definition of a “weapon” under Act 44 is broad and includes many everyday items that may not pose a threat or be a cause for concern in a given situation.
In accordance with this requirement, we are providing notice of an incident that occurred on the morning of February 6, 2026. A high school student inadvertently brought a small pocketknife to school in their belongings. Upon entering the building, the student noticed the item and immediately turned it over to the school police officer on duty. The matter was handled promptly and without incident. At no time were any students or staff members in danger.
We would like to take this opportunity to remind parents and guardians to check their child’s belongings each morning before school to help prevent similar situations. We also remind all adults that it is illegal to possess weapons on school property and to ensure they check their own person and belongings prior to entering any school building.
Thank you for your continued cooperation and support in keeping our schools safe.
Sincerely,
Dr. John Kimmel
Superintendent
